Thank you for your interest in the Milliken Fire Protection District! The following information is intended to give you a brief overview of our department and what we will expect from you as a volunteer firefighter.
If you successfully complete the hiring process, you will be required to complete the mandatory Firefighter I academy before coming on-line as a probationary member. The Fire Service Training Academy is designed to provide entry level training for potential firefighters. This course includes classroom and drill ground training covering NFPA 1001 objectives, for Firefighter I. Students are administered the Colorado Division of Fire Safety exams for Firefighter I upon successful completion of the academy. In addition to firefighter I you are required to complete Hazardous-Materials Operations as well. Hazardous-Materials Operations class immediately follows the firefighter I academy. Members who attend the district provided fire academy are required to give the district a minimum of 2 years of service via signed contract. Failure to complete the 2 years of service may require full or partial reimbursement to the district. If you are already State Certified Firefighter I & Hazardous Materials Operations, you do not need to complete the fire academy, but rather a skills assessment. All members are required to obtain a minimum State First Responder certification with 2 years of hire.
Once you are State Certified Firefighter I you will be assigned to a Company. We currently operate with 3 companies; Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie Companies. Shifts are scheduled on a 48-96 work schedule, meaning each shift is on duty for 48 hours and off for 96 hours. Volunteers are required to do a minimum of 36 shift hours a month at the fire station. Typically, volunteers come in at 1900 hours on the weeknights and shift until 0700 the following morning. However some volunteers prefer to shift during the day time due to other obligations, while others prefer weekends. Shifts may be scheduled in 12, 24, 36 or 48 hour blocks depending on your availability. You will also be required to attend department medical and fire training each month. As a volunteer you will be required to attend a mandatory 36 hours of fire related department training each year to stay in good standing. We strive to use the time we spend in training relevant to your success and safety while you are responding to and working emergency incidents. This training is critical to the success and safety of all department members.
All firefighters operate under a command structure while on duty, and an Incident Command Structure (ICS) while on scene of active fire department incidents. All structural related fire alarms require full department response. Volunteer firefighters also need to understand they may need to respond at any time to assist neighboring fire departments, and may be required to be on scene for hours at a time. Volunteer firefighters sacrifice a lot of time away from their families in the fire service. This work can place you in life threatening situations and requires you to be physically and mentally prepared.
Application's may be picked up at station 1 Monday through Friday from 8-5 or it may be downloaded from our website. Please See conditions below for additional requirements and information.
EXPERIENCED FIREFIGHTERS that are already Colorado State Certified FFI and EMT-B, may apply as volunteers at any time during the year. These applicants will also need to pass a physical agility test and pass oral and/or written tests.
The Milliken Fire Protection District conducts two (2) hiring processes a year, one in the Summer for individuals with current certifications, and an aditional process in October for individuals without experience or certifications.
